HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is given Monday through Thursday.  Spelling and math worksheets will be given daily and they are all due the following day.  Your child needs to read 20-30 minutes daily.

If any of the daily assignments are not completed or returned the following day,  the student will complete the homework at recess.  If there is a special circumstance  your child cannot complete his/her homework, please write a note letting me know that homework will be returned the next day.

Please keep the homework assignment sheet nearby (in their homework folder) so that your child knows what is expected daily.  On Friday, your child needs to bring back Thursday night’s homework along with their  Weekly Progress Report and the homework assignment sheet initialed by you.  This tells me that you have reviewed the assignments for the week.

Parent Academy I

Our first parent education night is next week. It is on Thursday, January 22, 2015. The focus is Common Core Math. The  new math standards are extremely rigorous. Students need to learn not only how to do math but how to explain the procedure or method they used to complete the math. Problem solving is a huge part of Common Core Math. It is very difficult for kids to understand the problems and then figure out how to solve them. Many of the problems are multiple step problems. We hope you will join us at 6:15 (to sign in) in the multi-purpose room to begin our evening of learning. You will be working with your child to see how they work through the tasks presented.

Happy New Year!!!

There will be no school on January 19 and January 29th. January 19th is a holiday to observe Martin Luther King's Birthday. January 29th is a teacher in-service day.

Glee Performance Thursday Dec. 18th

Parent Teacher Conferences will be the 5 days before  the Thanksgiving holiday. Nov. 20th, 21st, 24th, 25th, and 26th. I will be sending home conference preference letters soon. Please check your child's homework folder daily.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the CCSS Report Card (before conference time in November) and the changes that you'll see this year.

You'll find the information you need at www.musd.org. Click on Parents at the top of the page. Then click on CCSS Report Cards. Please pay close attention to the changes outlined for 2014-2015 by the district.

There are grade level report cards you can download. There is a report card with explanations for some sections. There is a survey if you which to express your opinion of the report card.

Welcome to Burnett and the 2014-2015 School Year

is picture day. It is a free dress day.y, March

i-ready concerns: I noticed the kids overall scores were low. It's possible the level of difficulty has changed due to Common Core Standards. Most of the kids scored more than a year  below grade level in math (K). The majority of the kids scored less than a year below grade level in reading (1st grade).

Do not be concerned that your child is placed at a kindergarten or 1st grade level at this time. Have your child practice the skills for the set amount of time as indicated on the homework sheet.

Sometimes the program shuts down for maintenance. Unfortunately we have all kinds of technical difficulties here at school so I understand your frustration. I appreciate the feedback from several parents. Just keep trying and have your child do their best.

If he/she can't do i-ready then have him/her do ixl math.

Please return the Emergency Card and First Day Questionnaire.

Homework Reminder

Study your spelling words. Read for 20 minutes every night.

Use mathplayground.com or sumdog.com to practice math facts. You can even do ixl.com for a while. It allow you to work on a few problems. I have a trial period for ixl and will give students their username and password  next week so they can do ixl at home for homework.
